HOW
DO CAR HEAD RESTRAINTS WORK?
A Personal
Letter from Drs. Brenda and Erik Slovin...
PROPER HEAD RESTRAINT POSITION
Most people don’t pay much attention to headrests
and unfortunately, poor
positioning can lead to serious whiplash and other types of neck and head
injuries.
One of the simplest and easiest ways to help protect yourself
during an automobile
accident is to make sure that your head restraint is in an optimal position.
First, make sure the top of your headrest sits level with
thetop of your head.
At the time of a collision, you head ‘ramps up’ the back of
the headrest. If the
rest is too low, your head may go over the top. Additionally, your head
should
rest directly against the headrest or at least within 2 inches of the
headrest. The
less space between your head and the rest the better. Failing to do this
can
result in tremendous whiplash creating a lifetime of significant head
and neck problems.
Following these two simple steps will ensure proper headrest
position, helping to protect you during an automobile collision, and from
a lifetime of pain.
