IMPORTANT SAFETY TIPS FOR SAFE HOLIDAY TRAVEL

A Personal Letter from Drs. Brenda and Erik Slovin...

Are you planning to drive long distances this holiday season? Here are a few sure-fire tips to help keep you and your family safe during this holiday season.

There are three main things to consider when driving to grandmother’s house:

FIRST: MAKE SURE YOU ARE DRIVING A SAFE VEHICLE

Before you decide to go over the hills and through the woods, consider having your vehicle inspected and any due maintenance completed before you go.

Your inspection should include all fluids, your brakes, tires, lights, battery, wipers, and gas.

Remember to pack a first aid travel kit as well as an emergency kit that includes flares, a flash light and batteries, drinking water, warm blankets, an extra sweatshirt or two and extra socks.

Don’t forget the jumper cables and packing the car manual is always helpful.

A cell phone is a fantastic way to help you and your family connected to emergency services should you find yourself in a pickle or worse - lost.

Remember to always keep your cell phone’s car charger in the car, and do not talk on the phone while driving.

And although it seems obvious, remember to tightly secure all your luggage and hard objects on the roof under a cargo net or in the trunk.

It’s important to prevent your clothing from becoming projectiles while on the road.

SECOND: BE A SAFE DRIVER

The excitement before a big trip can keep even the most prepared of us awake at night.

Get plenty of rest before you leave to help ensure a safe arrival.

Ways to do this include: Avoiding over-the-counter medications that can make you drowsy, Avoiding driving stress by giving yourself plenty of time to arrive at your destination, Avoiding speeding and of course, Do NOT drink while driving or before you are planning to drive.

THIRD: ONLY DRIVE WHEN YOUR PASSENGERS ARE SAFE

Even though we know it’s important there are still too many of us that drive without wearing our seatbelts.

Before starting the ignition, make it a rule that all passengers must wear their seatbelts. Humans and pets make great projectiles, and accidents are frequent during this time of year.

Keeping all car occupants properly restrained during your trip is a great way to ensure that you will make it safely to your desired destination.

Also, different people require different seat and head restraint settings. To help prevent against whiplash, adjust your head restraints so that the top of the restraint is level with the top of your head, and so that the head restraint is no more than two inches away from the back of your head.

Children under 6 years of age and 60 lbs should always be seated in the back and properly restrained in a child restraint system appropriate for their age, height, and weight.

Applying these rules when traveling help create a safe driving environment inside the car. You cannot control what happens around you however.

So stay alert, drive safely and have a wonderful holiday season!
