CHIROPRACTIC
AND YOUR
EXTRAORDINARY NERVOUS SYSTEM
A Personal
Message from Drs. Brenda and Erik Slovin…
What
Does The Nervous System Control?
Let’s begin
with a bird’s-eye view into the mysteries of the nervous system.
In the 1920’s, Dr. Henry Windsor, an MD in Pennsylvania, performed
autopsy studies to determine if there was a connection between minor spinal
curvatures and degenerated vertebrae or spinal discs, and diseased internal
organs. He discovered a nearly 100% correlation existed between degenerated
spinal vertebrae and discs and minor curvatures of the spine, and diseased
or malfunctioning organs. Remarkably, in most cases where there was a
diseased organ, a withered nerve could be traced directly back to the
spine.
The nervous system
literally controls every facet of your body’s functions. Tasting,
smelling, seeing, hearing, thinking, dreaming, moving, running, sleeping,
laughing, singing, remembering, feeling pain or pleasure, painting, writing
… you would be unable to do any of these things without your nervous
system. Every breath you take, every beat of your heart is ruled by your
nervous system.
This amazing system
also regulates your immune system and the way you respond emotionally
to times of stress.
How
Do Spinal Nerves Work?
The spinal cord is a primary component of your nervous
system, acting as a “super conduit” for an enormous network
of nerves that thread throughout your entire body. This network forms
a vital lifeline to organs, muscles and tissue with millions of nerves
flowing from and returning to the spinal cord. It has even been discovered
that some spinal nerves are attached directly to vertebrae by way of microscopic
ligaments.
Each one of these nerves transmits to and receives messages
from the brain. These messages containing information from both the internal
and external environment must go through the spinal cord to get to the
brain. Conversely, information from and decisions made in the brain travel
at lightning-fast speed through the spine to facilitate certain actions.
It is a two-way flow of information.
The delicate spinal cord and its associated nerves require
unique protection, providing strength as well as flexibility. The spinal
column is comprised of an elaborate system of small, interlocking bones
forming a tunnel that is slightly curved into an “S” shape.
Its flexible discs allow the body to twist and bend, while the vertebrae
are sturdy enough to protect the vital spinal cord.
Chiropractic Care – Healing
Nervous System Disorders
So what does all this
have to do with chiropractic care? Contrary to popular belief, chiropractic
doctors treat more than musculoskeletal tissues. Chiropractic care is
all about helping people live healthier, fuller lives, so the world of
chiropractic must delve deeper than strictly muscle and bone. Chiropractic
care is based on the belief that the same natural intelligence that can
grow a single cell into a complex human being comprised of billions of
cells can also heal the body, if the nervous system is free of disturbance.
Indeed, chiropractors recognize the life-giving intricacies of the marvelous
puzzle called the nervous system, and this awareness can facilitate profound
health benefits.
It is theorized that
even subtle aberrations in the alignment of the spine and its surrounding
tissue can disrupt nervous system activity. Mild spinal degeneration,
which is common in osteoarthritis, adversely affects the efficiency of
nerve flow to and from the spinal column.
Another condition
that adversely affects the nervous system is, many times, the result of
poor posture. When you sit or stand incorrectly for long periods of time,
that bad posture has far reaching effects on your spinal column and your
nervous system. Vertebral subluxation is frequently the result of poor
posture habits, causing areas of your spine to become slightly out of
place, resulting in an unhealthy alteration of nervous system activity
and restricted movement. This condition has been directly associated with
a cascading myriad of health issues, including Parkinson’s disease,
frequent headaches, neck pain and stiffness, and even infertility.
Chiropractic treatment
painlessly adjusts the vertebral column in order to correct these abnormal
nervous system conditions – without potentially harmful drugs and
without invasive surgery. There is no recovery time; instead, patients
frequently report an immediate relief from pain and restoration of movement.
With professional chiropractic care and improved posture, you may soon
feel years younger with an enhanced physical wellbeing and a new zest
for life.
