SAFETY TOPIC: AIRBAG SAFETY- SMART AIRBAGS

A Personal Letter from Drs. Brenda and Erik Slovin...

Smart Airbag Design

Smart airbags were introduced in the early 2000’s and are mandated for the
model year 2006. Vehicles with smart airbags have sensors, usually located in
the seat and seatbelt, tell the car information about the passenger. If the airbag
sensor indicates that the occupant is too small to safely withstand airbag deployment, the airbag will immediately turn off as soon as the vehicle engine is turned on.

Smart airbags are designed to reduce the risk of an airbag-related injury or death by adjusting their deployment force based upon the severity of the crash, passenger size and position, and seatbelt use.

Because larger families may be forced to put the older child in the front passenger seat, this feature finally provides passenger car drivers with the ability to turn the passenger airbag off. However, this does not change the fact that children are safest in the rear seat, and should still have their seat positioned as far back as possible if forced to ride up front.

No matter what type of airbags a vehicle has, remember these important
safety tips:

•Always buckle up and restrain all passengers properly.

•Ensure the driver airbag is directed at the chest, and adjust if possible.

•Always sit back 10" or more from the airbag cover.

•The rear seat is always the safest place for children ages 12 and under.
