CHIROPRACTIC
BENEFITS ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE AND
SPORTS INJURY RECOVERY
A Personal Message
from Drs. Brenda and Erik Slovin…
Sports Chiropractic Promotes Peak Performance
There are a number of compelling reasons for athletes to seek out sports
chiropractors to help improve their performance potential as well as treat
a sports injury. Case in point, active, athletic people have striking
physical and emotional differences from people with sedentary lifestyles.
Many
physicians simply do not possess the specific training and experience
needed for sports medicine and injury rehabilitation. Consequently, physicians
who do not regularly treat athletes often make mistakes in the diagnosis
and treatment of an athlete’s sports-related neuromusculoskeletal
problems.(1)
However, according
to the British Chiropractic Sports Council, doctors of chiropractic possess
training that can be of enormous benefit in treating and preventing sports-related
injury, while also improving peak athletic performance. Not a pro? Then
you need to know that chiropractic is not only beneficial to the experienced
and professional athlete, but is of great benefit to the amateur and weekend
athlete as well.
Chiropractic
care enhances and promotes spinal health, which increases optimum muscle
function while also elevating range of motion, coordination and balance.
And it all begins with your nervous system.
The Connection
Between Muscle Performance
And Your Nervous System
When one’s
muscles become stronger in response to training, the increased strength
is usually attributed to improved muscle size or tone. However, the truth
is that increased muscle strength has less to do with size than the way
the muscle is controlled by the nervous system. You see, the nervous system
controls every facet of your body’s functions … moving, running,
coordination, seeing, hearing, thinking, feeling pain or pleasure. Quite
literally, every breath you take, every beat of your heart is ruled by
your nervous system.
Recently,
research revealed a distinctly positive connection between chiropractic
manipulation and nervous system activity. This study showed that chiropractic
care improves parasympathetic nervous system activity.(2)
This is an
important revelation for athletes because the function of the parasympathetic
nervous system is to conserve energy as it slows the heart rate and increases
intestinal and gland activity.
In short,
the heightened parasympathetic nervous system activity resulting from
chiropractic manipulation enables the body to function at optimal capacity.
Is
Spinal Misalignment Impeding Your Peak Performance?
Jumping,
running, twisting and falling can all contribute to spinal misalignments,
also called vertebral subluxations. These misalignments result in soft
tissue imbalances that interfere with optimal nerve system function, which
in turn weakens your body’s muscles and impedes coordination.
Chiropractic
adjustments, or manipulation therapy, are exceptionally effective in restoring
the body’s proper biomechanics, while also strengthening muscles
groups weakened by nervous system interference and renewing motor skill
coordination.(3)
Chiropractic
Can Even Show You How To Run Faster
Learning how to run faster and longer is the goal of every runner, and
chiropractic care can definitely help get you there. By correcting spinal
misalignments, chiropractic relieves the low-back and hip pain - including
that awful clicking in the hip - that afflicts so many runners.(4)
The
result? You’ll find that you have a renewed passion for speed and
a body that’s ready to keep up with that passion.
Don’t
Wait For Pain Symptoms To Seek Chiropractic Care
Many times, athletes, both pro and recreational, are completely unaware
of an existing spinal disorder until an isolated, seemingly unrelated,
occurrence puts them on the sideline. Perhaps an increase in practice
time, or moving a certain way, suddenly causes pain. Or your level of
performance inexplicably begins to drop. The root cause is quite likely
a hidden spinal disorder.
Instead of
waiting for problems and pain to manifest, become proactive to prevent
sports injuries and keep your athletic performance at its peak. Supplement
your athletic training with regular chiropractic wellness visits. Your
body will thank you with an even higher level of pain-free peak athletic
performance.
